Savaii

Savaii is a tropical island and the largest island in the Samoa Islands. With a population of 42,000, Savai'i is third largest Polynesian island in the South Pacific and a popular destination. more

Savai'i offers everything from unspoilt marine life and waterfalls to caves, blowholes and rainforests and together with birds and other wildlife and plants, makes Savai'i a great place to visit. The Saleaula lava fields (where Mt Matavanu erupted 102 years ago), left 50 square kilometres of wrinkles and is a popular visitor attraction.

The Savai'i people provide a true insight into the traditional Samoan way of life with their culture. Indulge in a traditional Sunday meal cooked on an overground volcanic rock oven called umu or have a game of kirikiti (a form of cricket). Other pastimes include learning the art of tapa cloth making and painting.

Less densely populated than Upolu Island, there's a relaxing lifstyle on Savaii, with plenty of time to snorkel the clear blue waters, sail the magnificent lagoon or just explore Savaii Island.

The island of Savai'i was unaffected by the 2009 tsunami and earthquakes. Tourism and business is operating as per normal here.
