Although Norfolk Island is small in size (34.6km²), it has a huge history. Originally settled by Polynesians from the North Island of New Zealand, Norfolk Island was colonised in 1788 by Great Britain as part of its settlement of Australia. The island was used as a penal settlement for convicts until May 1855 (although it was abandoned between 1814 and 1825 due to the high costs of supply).
