Upolu is situated to the east of the "big island", Savai'i. On the northern coast of Upolu is Apia, the Capital of Samoa and Faleolo International Airport is to the west of Apia. Villages run along the north coast along with beautiful black beaches.
Roads wind around the coast and across the center of Upolu Island. Some of the area's best beaches are at Lepa and Aleipata and waterfalls cascade from the hillsides. There are plenty of places to swim in Upolu. Overall those on holiday will be enchanted by the easygoing Polynesian pace of life.
Tourism and business on the island of Upolu is returning to normal after the 2009 tsunami and earthquakes. The effects of the tsunami were confined to the southwest coast of Upolo and did not affect Apia, the Capital City.
